On a deeper level, one must appreciate what one already has. How often do you focus on what is lacking in your life rather than counting your blessings? How much richer are our lives when we are truly thankful MEANINGFULLY for what we have? This sends out a powerful message to the universe. Many Native American tribes revere the bison. South Dakota’s rugged Black Hill country is frigid and raw in winter. But in 1991, the February chill didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of delegates from 19 tribes that gathered there to give the American bison a new lease on life.

The buffalo spirit animal has a deep spiritual message. This spirit will help you to pray each time an event takes place in your life. The story of the White Buffalo Woman originates from the Lakota people, she taught them that all things are inter connected and that it is not necessary to struggle to have abundance. The one thing that is necessary, however, is to be connected with Spirit. Buffalo’s relationship to the Native American People of the USA highlights these lessons.
I had a dream where one red and one white baby buffalo wandered into my back yard. I was awed and an overflowing sense of peace and love filled my heart. A knock came at my front door and it was the police wanting to capture the buffalo. I became fearful for the animals, that the police wanted to cage or kill them. I brought them in my home while blocking the officer from entering my home and denying that I had seen them.

It was both an amazingly beautiful dream and at the same time fearful for the beautiful buffalo, which felt like visits from a great spirit. I could try to interpret this, but really you have to look into your own life for answers and that is an involved and detailed process. Perhaps your spirit totem, that which you are most like, changed, or you were incorrect in thinking you were a wolf when in fact you are currently a buffalo at heart. It could also mean that you were making wolf decisions and the time has come for buffalo decisions, which are different for a number of reasons I cannot quite pinpoint as of this precise moment.
Every part of this animal was used, right down to the hooves, which were used to make glue. Buffalo gave others the gift of life by sacrificing its own. Food and hides for clothing and shelter were provided. Prior to a buffalo hunt, prayers of gratitude were offered up to great spirit by the tribes. Post hunt, ceremonies were performed that honoured the buffalo’s spirit. Without the buffalo these tribes would not have survived the harsh winters. This is just one lesson of abundance – use whatever resources are available.
In forming the Inter-Tribal Bison Cooperative , the delegates hoped to restore the bison to millions of acres of tribal lands — and to a central place in tribal life. “We recognize the bison as a symbol of strength and unity,” says Fred DuBray, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux and former president of the ITBC who appears in American Buffalo. The South Dakota-based group believes that “reintroduction of the buffalo to tribal lands will help heal the spirit of both the Indian people and the buffalo . With the power and determination of the buffalo spirit animal in your life, it will ultimately mean that you are going to get somewhere in life and share in the spoils that then comes with it.
